Cinderflame sat at the top of a dune, tail flicking idly. He was a colossal black shadow against the sapphire-blue noon sky. The heat from the sun beat on his pelt, and he growled halfheartedly. It was far too warm in the desert, and he had never fully gotten used to the scorching heat. Sorrelkill should be here soon, he thought, and turned his mind to training. What moves did the Trainees know at this stage in their training? He frowned, unsure. We'd better start with something basic, maybe just getting past me... A gemsbok cantered by, sand rising in puffs from its hooves. The Kavari leader watched it with vague interest. It was plump and his mouth began to water. It could feed three ravenous wolves, with enough left over to make the buzzards so fat they fell out of the sky. He took one step towards it, and then realized it was a lost cause. There was no way he could catch up to it. He sat back down, curling his tail around his front paws. He surveyed the desert cooly with his bicolored eyes, the unmistakable king.

Sorrelkill trotted towards the meeting spot, barely feeling the heat of the desert. I get to train with the leader! he thought, excited. Up ahead, he saw Cinderflame sitting on top of a dune, and he quickened his pace. Loping up to his leader he said "I'm here. What are we going to start with?"

Cinderflame stood, stretching and shaking the sand from his fur. "Well, I think you'd better demonstrate what you know first. Just try to get past me." He began to crouch, but stopped as a thought struck him. "Claws sheathed, okay? No woundings." He purred briefly. The huge cat sank back into a crouch, tail-tip twitching. Inwardly, he was still purring. This was going to be great!

Sorrelkill nodded and crouched, tail also twitching. His green eyes flicked back and forth, surveying when the right moment would be. Lifting his front paw, he made as if to go right, then suddenly bolted left, running towards the open space behind Cinderflame.

Cinderflame began to dart to his right, but realized that was exactly what Sorrelkill wanted him to do. He turned, scrabbling for a pawhold on the loose sands, and dashed back towards Sorrelkill. The dark tiger reached out a jet-black paw, slamming it into the trainee's side. I've got you now...

Sorrelkill thought he was home free... until he felt Cinderflame's firmidable paw collide with his side, throwing him into the sand and completely winding him. Struggling to his feet, he gasped for breath before again atempting to run past his leader. How about this... he thought, trying to confuse the black and gold cat by his speedy recovery.

Cinderflame's eyes widened as he saw how quickly the Trainee recovered. He's fast! The leader's paws skidded in the sand as he raced across the few feet remaining between the two cats. Sand spattered in his eyes and he hissed. Wait... He smacked the dune with a heavy paw, sending up a spray of sand in the younger cat's face. While he's distracted, I'll strike!

Sorrelkill screeched as the sand was thrown into his face, temporarily blinding him. Acting on instinct, he dove toward his leader's paws, and rolled into them forcefully, trying to trip him. What am I doing? He thought crazily. I'm gonna get trampled!

Cinderflame winced as Sorrelkill slammed into his paws. The Trainee was still growing, but he was heavy enough to unbalance the leader. He tottered fro a few seconds, scrambling wildly in the sand. He finally recovered his balance and flung himself on the Trainee, pinning him to the ground. "That was excellent," he purred. "I really like the way you tried to unbalance me. If you were a bit bigger, it would have worked."

Sorrelkill didn't fight back when Cinderflame pinned him. Looking up at his leader, he purred and said "I thought I was being stupid. I acted on instinct." Inside, he glowed with his leader's praise.

"Instinct is good," Cinderflame said calmly, flicking his long tail. "It can help you when your other senses deceive you." He stepped back and let the trainee up. "That was excellent.' The huge Kavari thought for a second, his eyes narrowing. "Okay, now we'll try a different approach. I'm a Kanaran who invaded your camp, and you have to drive me off.' He crouched, bicolored eyes glittering mysteriously. This wouldn't be a perfect practice, of course, because he was bigger than a wolf, but it would still prepare Sorrelkill for attacking a Kanaran.

Sorrelkill crouched and tensed opposite of his leader. Tail twitching, he snarled and tried the most basic approach. He threw himself at Cinderflame's right side and reared on his hind legs, lashing out with sheathed claws.

Cinderflame jumped back as Sorrelkill reared and slashed at his side. That was a good move... Sand slid under his paws and he fell heavily on his side. He gasped and coughed, trying to spit out sand. Uh oh...

Sorrelkill's eyes blazed triumphantly, and he pounced on his leader. He tried to grab the scruff of his neck while his strong paws gripped the big cat's shoulders.
ooc - Short, sorry.

Cinderflame flailed in the sand, feeling the Trainee's powerful jaws close on his neck. As hard as he tried, he could not throw Sorrelkill off. Sand splattered in his face, and he choked. gasping. His eyes stung from the hot sand. This isn't working! Suddenly, the leader went limp.
